Our philosophy

Yoga that meets you where you are

Root & Rise is a small, independent studio on South Higgins in Missoula. We keep classes intentionally small so every student gets real attention. Whether you are stepping onto a mat for the first time or deepening a long practice, this is the place to do the work.

What we offer

Three practices. One studio.

Every class is taught by a certified instructor who knows your name and your practice.

01 · Movement

Flow Yoga

Breath-linked movement that builds heat, strength, and focus. Our Flow classes follow a Vinyasa structure. Each pose flows to the next in a continuous rhythm. You will leave stronger, clearer, and ready for the rest of your day.

02 · Recovery

Restorative Yoga

Fully supported passive holds that release deep tension and restore the nervous system. Props do the work. You rest into them. Restorative is for anyone managing stress, recovering from an injury, or simply needing an hour of genuine stillness.

About Maya

Taught by someone who has been on your mat

Maya Chen opened Root & Rise in 2017 after years of teaching in San Francisco and a pull back to Montana, where she grew up.

She holds a 500-hour RYT certification with continuing training in Yin, Restorative, and trauma-sensitive practices. The credential she is most proud of: her students come back. Not because they have to. Because the practice works, and the studio feels like theirs.

What Missoula students say

I tried yoga apps and videos for two years and never stuck with it. Maya's Restorative class changed that. I have been coming every Tuesday for eleven months.

The small class size is the whole thing. At bigger studios I felt invisible. At Root & Rise, Maya knows where I get stuck and helps me through it.

I thought thirty minutes would not feel like enough. I was wrong in the best way. I now do Meditation three times a week, and everything else in my life is calmer.

Comfortable clothes you can move in, water, and a willingness to show up. We have mats, blocks, straps, and blankets at the studio. You do not need to bring your own gear, though you are welcome to use yours.

How much does a yoga class cost in Missoula?

Drop-in classes are $18. The Monthly Unlimited membership is $89/month and covers all class types. We also offer 10-class punch cards for $150. New students can try their first class for $10.

What is the difference between Flow and Restorative yoga?

Flow yoga links breath to movement in a continuous sequence. Expect to build heat, strength, and focus. Restorative yoga uses props to fully support the body in passive holds, calming the nervous system and releasing deep tension. Many students practice both throughout the week.
